"The Empire of the Joined Lands has been the real symbol of wealth and power since a long time ago. But now, evil creeped into heart of the Empire, and the Golden Axe was stolen. The council of Defensors was tricked and misguided. The four best warriors of the whole realm are already on pursuit of the enemy. The council gave them the power of Elemental Magick, since great are the dangers they'll have to face. They know no fear or doubt. In their hearts and minds there's only the sacred quest: to get back the Golden Axe." Golden Axe Myth is the spiritual successor to Golden Axe, an arcade game by Sega, originally released in 1989 and later ported to many home computers. In terms of plot it is a prequel though. The goal of the game is to retrieve the axe, fighting your way through 16 different locations with the help of 4 main protagonists (but there are also "hidden" characters who can join the party in later stages) - barbarian Ax Battler, amazon Tyris Flare, dwarf Gilius Thunderhead and Death Adder, who was a villain in Golden Axe. All heroes have different strengths and weaknesses. You play only one character at a time, but if you lose a life you can choose to play another character from the point where you "died". Points and money give extra lives and credits. There are also several upgrades you can collect - they either increase your attacking and defensive power or the power of your magic (you can summon devastating forces in critical moments if you have enough magic points). They are usually hidden in rocks or bushes or can be obtained in bonus stages where you chase the sprites holding them. In duel mode the goal is to survive as many levels as possible, fighting more powerful enemies in each stage. Golden Axe Myth was developed with OpenBOR - open source engine which was also used to create Beats of Rage remake.
