Freeciv for MorphOS 3.2.7 =========================
Freeciv (https://www.freeciv.org) ported to MorphOS: the turn-based strategy game of empire building, from the stone age to the space age, against the computer or other players over the network.
freeciv the game (SDL3 client) freeciv-server the server, started by the game for a local game, or on its own for a network game freeciv-mp the modpack installer: more rulesets, tilesets, soundsets and scenarios from the Internet (MUI)
REQUIREMENTS
- MorphOS 3.21 - sdl3.library 3.4, sdl3_image.library 3.4, sdl3_ttf.library 3.3 and sdl3_mixer.library 3.3 in LIBS: - TinyGL - A running TCP/IP stack, even for a game alone: the game talks to its server through it. - openssl4.library, only for the list of Internet servers and the modpack installer (MorphOS 3.21 has it). - sqlite.library, only for the modpack installer.
INSTALLATION
1. Copy the Freeciv drawer where you like. 2. Start freeciv.
Everything the game writes goes to the drawer user/, made at the first start: user/freeciv-client-rc-3.2 the settings user/saves/ the saved games user/scenarios/ your own scenarios user/3.2/ the modpacks installed user/freeciv.log the game's messages, emptied at each start user/freeciv-server.log the messages of the local server user/freeciv-mp.log the modpack installer's messages
PLAYING
- Start New Game: the game starts freeciv-server in the background and connects to it. The server quits by itself when you leave the game. - Load Game: the same, from a saved game of user/saves/. - Join Game: a server you name. Join LAN Server: the servers of your network. Join Pubserver: the servers on the Internet (needs openssl4.library).
Rulesets: classic, civ2civ3, civ1, civ2, multiplayer, sandbox, alien. Tilesets: amplio2, hexemplio, cimpletoon, trident, isotrident, hex2t, isophex, alio, toonhex.
The language is the first one of these that is set: the variable LANGUAGE, the variable LANG, the first preferred language of the Locale preferences. English and French are included.
MODPACKS
freeciv-mp fetches the list of modpacks of www.freeciv.org and installs the one chosen, with the modpacks it needs, in user/3.2/ (user/scenarios/ for the scenarios), where the game finds them. Choose one in the list, or give the address of its .mpdl file, then Install modpack. The Installed column shows the version you have.
Quitting during an installation asks first, and stops it: the modpack is then not counted as installed.
From a Shell: freeciv-mp --help lists its options, and freeciv-mp --install <address of the .mpdl file> installs that modpack as soon as the window opens.
SERVER ALONE
For a network game, start freeciv-server from a Shell or from Ambient. It waits for the players on port 5556, and its window takes its commands: help, start, save, quit... Started from Ambient, its window closes at quit, and stays open if the server stops on an error, so the message can be read.
freeciv-server --help lists its options. For example, a scenario: freeciv-server -f PROGDIR:data/scenarios/europe.sav.gz
SCREEN AND SPEED
- Options, Interface: Screen resolution and Fullscreen are applied at once, without restarting. Full screen uses the screen mode closest to the chosen resolution. - The map is drawn by the processor and shown with TinyGL: a smaller resolution is faster. - SetEnv FREECIV_FPS 1 before starting the game shows the frames per second and the time to show one, at the top of the screen.
NOT INCLUDED
- The server's user database. - The ruleset editor and the other clients (GTK, Qt). - The flags are the PNG ones: the SVG flags are not used. - Chinese, Japanese and Korean fonts.
